Do you think The Silmarillion should be adapted for film?
There are terrific stories and plot arcs that lead to the third age. Feanor and the Oath of Feanor, Narn I Hurin, the beginning of Arda and the battles of old leading to the destruction of Angband and Beliariand. THe story of Beren and Luthien. Turgon and the hidden city of Gondolin....Tolkien created a vast landscape of peoples and Monsters ,heroes and Villains. Treachery and Valor I dare say it would be a monumental undertaking myself Dwarfing the size and length of the existing films.

If the Silmarillion is "adapted for film" it must be done by way of a TV series, pas de quéstion If it is put on film, too much will be cut out. The stories in the Silmarillion are too completx and, to show my obsession, too beautiful to be put into one, or two or three, 3-hour films. Look at miniseries like The Tudors: there is no rush to tell the story and, as a result, they're very well done. Also, don't even think of hiring Peter Jackson et al. for anything that involves screenwriting. He'll have Feanor and company surfing across the sundering seas, and turn Galurung into some wisecracking, pop culture dragon. Oy. Let him organise the scenery and sets and do what he's good at, which is not adapting a book to a screeplay (a lesson to all of us, boys a girls: know your weaknesses (as well as your strengths)).

Hey, you beat me to it, StW! I was just thinking how all these enthusiastic posters might breathe new life into our project.

For any who are interested, we have been treating the SIL as a serialization of the three big tales - Fëanor, Beren & Luthien & the Fall of Gondolin/Earendil - under the overarcing theme of " The History of the Silmarils". We are NOT trying to adapt the whole of the SIL (COH and Numenor might be possible projects for the future,) and we are trying to stay close to canon wherever possible, although some cutting from whole cloth has obviously been necessary, and we have woven a story set in the Fourth Age with familiar characters from the Trilogy throughout the tales from the SIL

We have finished 10 episodes so far, bringing us up to the end of Fëanor's Tale, and we are currently writing a 2 hour special on Galadriel and Celeborn in Doriath to fill in some of the back story before we tackle Beren & Luthien.

Do take a look if you are interested at all.

Well in the Random Talk area of this board we have been adapting the SIL to the screen for some time now. All are welcome to join us.

I cannot imagine how they would film the Silmarillion.. I would LOVE to see it.. but I am a HUGE fan.. What would be cool is to see it as a series of stories.. perhaps on television, sort of like what they did with the Star Trek series. Then they would be able to take their time and tell the story properly.

I would love to see The Silmarillion put onto film. I don't think that it could be done as one or even three movies, however. It would be great as an on-going series though-somewhat like the James Bond franchise. The danger, of course, is that by doing that the films will be cheapened. It would definitely have to be done by people who are very dedicated to maintaining the integrity of what PJ started.

There is an epic metal band from Germany that adapted the Silmarillion to music, and in my opinion they did an admirable job. Blind Guardian is the band name, and Nightfall in Middle Earth is the c.d. title. It is worth checking out!!! ENJOY!!!!!!!!!

I agree with all you say Brego. It would be very interesting to hear a full orchestral piece on parts of the work. I used to have a very interesting LP (shows how old I am) title Lord of the Rings by Bo Hanson. I could not stop listening to it. In my view a film about the Numenoreans attempting to land on the Undying lands would make a good film and begin to link in the hobbit and Lord of the Rings films.
