I won't have a lot of supporters, but the only decent actors were Bernard Hill as Theoden, Sean Astin as Sam and Sean Bean as Boromir. Admittedly, it was difficult to appraise certain actors (Denethor and Faramir for example) because their characters were so badly written.

The acting was incredible. It is a travesty that none of the actors were recognized by the Academy. IMHO, the top three performances were: Ian McKellan as Gandalf, Sean Bean as Boromir, and Viggo Mortenson as Aragorn.

I became a huge fan of Sir Ian McKellen after seeing his portrayal of Gandalf, which I considered spot on according to how I'd imagined the wizard for years. I also developed a keen interest in Sean Bean who fleshed out Boromir very nicely indeed! Arwen, it was Patriot Games. Have you seen his Richard Sharpe series? Hubba hubba!

I actually quite like David Wenham, on the theatrical release of Two Towers, he was only really on the fringe of the Frodo and Sam storyline, but with the extended edition, it really did his performance justice and it lent weight to the character of Faramir, at the end of Two Towers the extended edition, Faramir really did redeem himself when he warned Gollum about leading Frodo and Sam into danger, thus giving his character a really good story arc. I think David Wenham's performance got kind of overlooked until the extended edition was released.
