I read the trilogy first in high school when a friend loaned me her copy, then read the Hobbit. Since then I think that I have read the trilogy at least thirty times, and the Hobbit at least 10 times.

LOTR in three months good for a seventh grader? I first read it in three weeks, age 12.

    I am 50 years old

I first read the hobbit in 1967 when I was 7 and a half. I first read the LOTR when I was 9 years old in a 1066 page single publication (It is not a true trlogy, but a single coherent story divided by the publishers into 3 books for financial reasons and because it was regarded as too long.....similar rationale for the LOTRs movies)

I have re-read the hobbit many times and the LOTR at least once a year for over 40 years
    or so.

I am currently reading the hobbit to my 4 year old son William nightly...We are on Chapter VIII Flies and Spiders. It has been a long
while since I read The Hobbit out loud and I am amazed that my son gets all excited and enjoys the visual feast that JRR Tolkien first published in 1937. The language used is somewhat archaic and very English and can be complicated (particularly for a 4 year old)to grasp, but when I question him about events or characters he has absorbed it well and particularly looks forward to meeting Smaug the Dragon and seeing the golden hoard.

I too love Peter Jacksons LOTR movies (Extended versions on DVD!!) They match a great deal of the visualisations created in the book!!

i read the hobbit first then read the trilogy and it all started cause i had to do "book reports" for my english class in high school (freshman year). it captivated me and i think i have read them all again maybe 12 times since then (if not more). my freshman years was in the early 70's so i have had time... =D

i have not read anything else by tolkien but my daughter has read several others, the silmarillion in particular and she constantly has to tell me about the histories of middle earth. i tried reading the series to her before the movies but she was never interested but when the first came out when she was in 7th grade she ended up reading all of the LOTR series herself in about 3 months time... not bad for that age.

1st read the hobbit & LOTR in June 1983 when i was 13 yrs. old (still have my original paperback copies), then re-read them 1985 every other year until 2001. i haven't read them since 2001, due to the films, but i have listened to them on CD (unabridged, of course) in 2005 and last year after uploading them to my iPod. i've read the silmarilion 3 times (1st try was in the mid 80's, but i couldn't get through it -- too young, i guess). i've listened to the CDs and iPod more than either The Hobbit or LOTR. read children of hurin last year and just downloaded it from audibles.com for my iPod last weekend, so i'll be listening to it in a few weeks while on vacation at the outter banks (joy).
