UNKNOWN artist for J.E.A. Tyler's 1970's Tolkien Companion
Does anyone know the name of the artist that did the cover art of the 70's version of JEA Tyler's Tolkien Companion?  Wonderful watercolor!

The illustrator is Kevin Reilly, but sometimes a different person does the jacket design. It reminds me a little of Brian Froud's work. (I wish he'd do some JRRT illus.)

Hey, Sauron, this must be the dragon painting you remembered, and the book is just about still available:

Thanks for that info, STW - I knew that picture reminded me of something - now I know, it was Arthur Rackham's fairytale illustrations!

Zucker never amounted to much as a fantasy illustrator. I remember him doing a dragon for some anthology many years back but then he simply vanished. I have not seen a litho of this particular painting. Zucker greatly admired the work of Arthur Rackham - the British ilustrator who has inspired so many great illustrators including Michael Hague.
Glad to be of some help.

This website shows all the different covers for this book: http://www.librarything.com/work/3315221/covers/

Have you contacted the publishers about it, or have they gone out of business ?

I've been searching for the answer to this one for a long time. I know the Hildebrant Brothers did a cover for a companion, but I'm looking for the artist that did the watercolor artwork featured. It's driving me crazy!

I think this might be the answer you are looking for :-

http://www.alibris.com/booksearch.detail?invid=9296601890&browse=1&isbn=9780333196335&qsort=&page=1

The cover shown is I think the one by the Hildebrant Brothers, and is not the one referred to in the write-up below. It could be your edition - check the ISBN if you can find it in your copy. If it matches then the artist is Ken Leeder. ok

Maybe on the hardcover, but not on the softcover (which is the one I own). The illustrations are by Kevin Reiley, but he didn't do the cover art.
