Del Toro: maybe a 2nd film - but maybe not!!!!

TORN is reporting this from a recent Del Toro interview at the Los Angeles film festival.

=====================================================

"We believe there is a second movie, if there isn’t, there will not be. If we find it, we will shoot it, but by God, if we do not find it, we will not shoot it. I am anxious to shoot the book, and I’m willing and able to dedicate myself to shooting the [second film].

In the four books that are in the domain of the copyright, there are appendices and ideas and things that can be traced without risk. But I have to be careful not to overstep. We believe there is a way to create this film and make it interesting, but it’s too early."

==================================================

Sounds like he will not just make any crap with the name Middle-earth attached just to make money for the studio. And that sounds good to me.  In the same interview he expressed disdain for bankers and making money so maybe he has strong socio/economic/ political views which are coloring this statement.

Well, they certainly did keep everyone in stitches about doing The Hobbit in the first place. That PJ was even considering making an adaptation using the appendices and Silmarilllion is a bonus treat that I hope to see happen, heh.

i must say i like your thoughts, ive also dabbled with the idea, as many have i guess, that PJ and fran have at least written initial parts of it or ideas..maybe made book chapters into potential film scenes.

Absolutely, the concept of two films was probably agreed upon a long time ago. I find it hard to believe that they would be talking about the script with pre production ready to start. The script for the Hobbit was probably written during the LOTR trilogy. I feel the studios were waiting on the audience to be ready for another round of Tolkien magic. As for the late casting of Viggo, its all about the "market". It would be easier to sell these films to the world with a good degree of the original cast. Its all about timing. Maybe the idea of having to spend up to 4 years in NZ does not appeal to GDT????????????

agree, its just trixy comments to keep us excited and engaged in the films..i dont think there is any doubt. there will be two films. ive read and seen a couple of interviews with GDT and it strikes me that he isnt the best communicator at all times, he phrases himself a bit elusive and in consequent. This could of course be that he aims for multi faceted answers, to avoid giving too much away. i mean, obviously.

Glad to also see it that way Angelica.
This is the pre-film talk to make all of us Tolkien fans feel good about everything associated with the project. Its pillow talk.

I agree Sauron, for me it's just a trick - a stupid trick - in order to let our anticipation growing.
I think they have already decided the cast (at least the main roles) and the plot of F2 (at least its backbone).
And they have the script of The Hobbit closed in some drawer in PJ's house.

Lets not be fooled for a minuted here. 90% probablility that Del Toro will find that elusive story and make that second film. And if not, there are other directors who would jump over skyscrapers forthe opportunity.,

But on the other side, two movies is more expensive than one ;) So if it doesnt seem to be any good artistic and tolkien lore grounds for making a second film i dont see how they can way potential earnings heavier than the fact that PJ and GDT doesnt support the making of film two. But i dont put too much store in what he is saying now, GDT cant be more than midly enthusiastic about the second film, seeing as they dont have a script..you cant say much about, anything, before the script is finished. which the late casting of Viggo illustrates.

I agree, I think the studio will want to milk it for all the money they can, but good on Del Toro for saying that he doesn't plan on just making any old thing.

I hate to be cynical, but I reckon the studios will want a minimum of two films, its all about product sales. The two movies allow them great lead in time for releasing toys, dvd's, games etc. Its all about money, they are not going to make such a huge investment unless they can see a profitable return. It will also allow them to resell the LOTR trilogy to a new audience. Also for WETA and the huge pre / post production facilities in NZ, two films will justify the output for labour costs etc. Making two films will create at least 3/4 years work.

While I respect the director's decision about focusing on quality, the studios will want two movies. In fact they will try to milk this for every cent that they can. For them its all about profit. I wonder will the upcoming actors strike affect the production??
