Doug Jones in... with a lot of make up

I found it right now in TORn.

In a video interview, GDT said he's going to give Doug Jones "a very hard thing. That will very difficult to him to pull off. He will suffer and he will spend long hours in make up".

You can find the video HERE.

Of course Jones did work already with GDT in Hellboy and Pan's Labyrinth.

So, who (or what) do you think he will play in The Hobbit?

good suggestions, but my favorite is DAvid Suchet. or poirot if you like ;-) he has a quite different voice when he is not playing poirot.

Yes, I was looking for a pic of Doug Jones as I didn't know what he looked like minus makeup, and there that snippet was.....other suggestions I've seen for the voice of Smaug have included folk like Ian McShane and Vin Diesel...and while I'm not supporting either of these choices, I suppose they must've worked subconsciouly on me because lately I've found myself thinking of Smaug as a big beefy 'bully boy' type.

I haven't seen Hellboy with him in it, but can see DHP turning in a wonderful performance as a snarky, smarmy, effete dragon instead! That'd be excellent!

On IMDB it says they got David Hyde-Pearce (?sp?) - Niles, from 'Fraiser' to dub DJ's accent in 'Hellboy', but he didn't want to be credited because he didn't want to detract from DJ's excellent performance. DHP! Gotta love him. Hmmmm. Wonder if we could get a gig for him in 'the Hobbit'?

IMO its not a huge problem that he is not british, worked very well with elijah and sean..jnes has a very subtle dialect in hellboy, a kind of dialect that could work well with some small changes.

ok, i guess omeone should vote for the necromancer part, i think he will play the necromancer. the necromancer would be tall, but thin and with rough traits, which i believe jones has, face etc..cheek bones, nose, he is not a "pretty" man but he has a sort of classic look that with some modifications could make for a very good sauron..mainly bvecause i guess you would want a beautyfull / astonishing but still terrible kind of look and feel going on for the necromancer..its kind of the same lane as with the mouth of sauron, he was of course just ugly but terrible and fantasticly well done IMO. This kind of feel should be implemented for the necromancer, not an easy thing to do i guess, but we have both PJ and GDT, it should work out alright i think ;-)

Doug Jones looks like he's out of the same mould as all the New Line Elves to me too, but that role doesn't seem to fit with the info given very well. It shouldn't be 'very hard' for him (I mean in a sense other than the...disputedness...of his good looks), or involve 'suffering..and...long hours in make up' to play an elf, should it? I would think he's much more likely going to end up being an orc - which would be far from being a disaster. With a bit of make-up and prosthetics, I could easily see him as an elf gone horribly wrong...and if he IS the Goblin King that's terrific news because as GDT's mate, he might even get a few decent lines of dialogue!

But then again, as I'd prefer to see the proverbial upturned-broom-with-the-bucket-for-a-head playing the Goblin King rather than Ron Perlman (an alternative which has been suggested a few times), that probably isn't saying much. Nothing against Ron personally of course, but please, just let him play a different role.

I think Dougie will play the Goblin King...his thin structure lends itself well to that type of character.
Thranduil needs to played by a very good-looking (English) man to be Legolas'/Orlando Bloom's father.

the goblin king wouldnt be tough
at first i thought smaug, and from the wording it could well be smaug. but the necromancer is a god idea. i wouldnt be surprised if he had multiple roles.
also ron perlman definately has beorn. hes been my choice for beorn from the begining

WOW that's a great idea Ethelwynn! I have to watch the video another time, I cannot remember if they named the Hobbit or "the movie" in general.

Here's an awful thought: He couldn't be Sauron, could he? Assuming Sauron were more visible in these movies than he was in LotR.
