Beleg Where do you get the "the book clearly states that no weapon can harm Gandalf" statement? I have read the LoTR many times and think you may be mistaken. Brego "Love the Books & the Film.... Lifes too short to whine." Best post ever............... more

Olorin That Gothmog could be a Nazgul is a stretch and is unsupported by fact. You are mixing and matching information to suit your needs. To say that "One could not expect it to become such an evil place if occupied only by orcs." is ludicrous. Look at the Tower of Cirith Ungol. It had only Orcs and the Watchers. Why wouldn't Minas Morgul have had the same pervasive evil?... more

I agree with Evenstar. Not having the "Scouring of the Shire" included in the film was a travesty... more

Uruk-Hai Such optimism from someone named for a race of Orcs? You do yourself no justice!!!!... more

Son of Craig, Arwen was in Rivendell. Frodo was alone on the far side of the Ford of Bruinen (atop Asfaloth). Glorfindel was the elf who found the travelers on the road to Rivendell and chased the Nine's horses into the river.... more

All of the beings discussed are sentinent beings in the book. Why shouldn't they speak? Keep in mind, Middle Earth is a world where Magic truly exists, from simple tricks to Tom Bombadil and the various Maia who inhabit Middle Earth in human form. It should remain magical and not be made into our reality by making it look like our dull world.... more

In addition to all the points already made.......What annoyed me most was the parts that were totally made up. Elves from Lorien (or was it elves from Rivendell lead by Haldir, from Lothlorien,, I forget) fighting at Helm's Deep? Aragorn being thrown into a river, dying and being sent back? Had PJ stuck with the real story, it would have been much better.... more

"The Complete Guide to Middle-Earth" is wrong. E. of A. is correct. Read the appendices to the LOTR. Khamul was the Nazgul who spoke with Hamfast Gamgee at BagEnd... more

Maedhros Where did you get that info? I don't remember there ever being any specificity regarding the identities or locations of the mortal realms of the Nine.... more

Blair Your comment that even Elrond didn't know who the Necromancer was at the time of The Hobbit is incorrect. Gandalf had already been inside Dol Guldur, when he found Thrain, by this time and knew it was Sauron.... more

Easily Bilbo. He held the ring for 60 years and gave it up of his free will, despite having used it extensively. If you include the Silmarillion, Turin Turambar was a great tragic hero.... more

Gandalf is a Maia. He is FAR older than any elf, even Manwe or Olwe... more

The exact locations of the realms and identities of the kings were never specified. The Witch King came to power in Angmar during the Third Age, after the defeat of Sauron by the Last Alliance, so he was already a Ringwraith at that time. I don't believe Tolkien ever said where his original realm was.... more

A son is not his father. Christopher Tolkien has said many times that he didn't know his father's intent with certain stories. As I said, only the published stories were finished. Giving unfinished stories the same credence as the published ones is a stretch, but if it makes you happy, have at it.... more

CT is not JRRT, but believe what you will. I just believe there are too many contradictions in the other works to quote them as the absolute truth. Just out of curiosity, how did CT "officially say it"?... more

Luthien Keep in mind that anything other than the Hobbit, LOTR or Silmarillion is just Tolkien's notes (actually that's all the Silmarillion is too). Much of the other works are just alternative versions of the stories that were published. As such you cannot take what was written as gospel.... more
