What a disgusting thought. The only thing Tom Cruise has going for him is that he's Hobbit-sized. If he goes anywhere near Bard, I am not going anywhere near this movie!!!!... more

Guest - do you think 'non-book fans' won't come to this movie unless it's got well known actors in it like Hugh Jackman?? Oh, of course - the LotR movies featured mostly fairly unknown actors and no one went to see those movies, did they? :)... more

If one of the UK TV shows Guillermo has been watching is "Spooks" (it's just been shown in New Zealand anyway), I can't help thinking he might put RA on his dreamlist as Thranduil. RA had lost so much weight for that Spooks role and he looked ethereally beautiful - very much like an elf. He's even got the pointy ears!! I hope not (even though it might be a bigger role) as Thranduil is uncanny and strange and not a very likeable character. (Though RA has proved that he's brilliant at makin...... more

Yes, Roheryn - it's very strange the way that the ends of the posts just disappear. Is there now a limit on the number of words per post? I put some nice pics on the end of my last post, but they've vanished... :(... more

Oooo... yes - when I read on TORn that GDT had been watching Gaskell, my heart stopped (even though I keep telling myself 'don't get your hopes up'). It would have to be N&S he's watching, surely - Cranford is almost all women (and they're notably lacking in The Hobbit). It could also be Gaskell's 'Wives and Daughters' (which has a couple of men in it) but I sincerely hope not! And I hope the UK TV shows he's watching include Robin Hood, because then he'd be seeing the perfect Bard... (thought it ...... more

This looks quite good, Dr Death, but the proportions are all wrong. Colin Firth is a tall man so his head is much smaller in relation to his body - even if he wore a lot of padding he'd be the wrong shape for a hobbit!... more

I don't think the casting directors would be put off by RA's role as Guy of Gisborne because the percentage of the world's population that has actually seen him in that role (or any other role for that matter) is tiny. Most people - especially those outside of the UK - have never even heard of him. Which is just right for a movie like The Hobbit.... more

We want our totty!!! And we're unlikely to get it anywhere else in The Hobbit. I hope that GdT remembers that women make up half of his audience, and that WOMEN BUY MORE DVDs THAN MEN! (That's a well-researched fact). It's also well known that Richard Armitage sells DVDs (well, not literally ;) )... more

Dispossessed kings seem to be de rigeur in fantasy - they wander about all over the place, from Middle Earth to Earthsea, Narnia to Stormhold... I suppose that's inevitable in lands populated by marauding goblins, dragons, witches and other covetous creatures. The return of a king makes such a satisfying story (though, sadly, not for Thorin) that I think most viewers wouldn't complain about a bit of repetition. And besides, who'd want to miss out on such an amusing clash of personalities as that betw...... more

You're a bit outnumbered here, DD! And why do we need an 'idiosyncratic looking' Bard when the whole of the movie will be crowded with 'idiosyncratic looking' characters... the dwarves, Beorn, hobbits, etc? Come on... this must be any sane casting director’s ONLY choice for Bard! As a belated reply to your question of a while back, Lalaithiel, about Bard’s role being expanded, I’ve just read the PJ/GdT interview in ‘Empire’ (it came out a month later in the Oz edition) – they were asked if they ...... more

I suppose it just depends on one's tastes, naela. Everytime I read LOTR I never imagine any of the main characters (apart from the dwarves) to have full beards, probably because I can't stand them! :o Some nice stubble is fine though. I can't recall Tolkien ever describing Aragorn, Bard, Boromir, Faramir, etc. as having beards, but would be quite happy to be wrong if you can show me where! :) I'm a book illustrator by profession and have done hundreds of drawings of all my favourite Tolkien men over t...... more

You're right, draylon - when Sir Guy's onscreen you just don't look at anyone else; he completely steals every scene in which he appears (despite the 'Guyliner'!) Not only because he's stunningly handsome, but because he has the most amazing and powerful screen presence. If anyone needs proof, check out this gorgeous, gorgeous video,"Guy's Lament" taken from the first episode of the new RH (with a few flashbacks) - it's superbly edited: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rzNQe5fOgSs And wow! tha...... more

Is this more to your liking mulubinba? Bard fighting in the Battle of Five Armies? An yes, YMN - RA has a proper sized nose! Aristocratic and noble. No self-respecting Tolkien hero should ever be seen with a short snub thing on his face.... more

So glad you're liking RA more and more, YMN! Yes, he would have made a great Aragorn - I thought that the first time I saw (and heard) him in "North and South". I liked Viggo well enough, but was very dissatisfied with his weak voice. Richard has got a beautiful voice - powerful and deep, with a gorgeous velvety timbre. As I've said before, I'd love to hear him speak words written by Tolkien! Yes Lalaithiel, those smiley faces are mental! Here's a nicer face for your delectation: ... more

I'm surprised you don't recall Bard's nobility or leadership, YMN! It was why I fell in love with him all those years ago. I wrote a description of his deeds which is now a few pages back - here's a condensed version: We first encounter Bard when the dragon is coming to Esgaroth - he is the only man to realize the danger when firelight is seen flickering on the mountain. When he tells the townspeople the dragon is coming they accuse him of "always foreboding gloomy things" but he manages to persuade t...... more

When did you last read the book, YMN? Bard does a lot more than just kill Smaug - he's very important in the last few chapters, showing good leadership, nobility and wisdom in all of his acts and decisions. He is in fact the only embodiment of the noble, heroic human so beloved by Tolkien (Aragorn, Beren, Faramir, etc) Bard was always my favourite character in The Hobbit, right from when I first read it as a kid!... more

Sorry Peter, but Toby Stephens doesn't come close - despite his pedigree! :) OMG, that scene from Robin Hood 3 is riveting! Roheryn, you're right - it certainly blew me away! RA's tortured Guy looks so desperate, intense and dangerous - yet somehow vulnerable. (It's such a pity we'll have to put up with a whole lot of boring scenes featuring Robin.) I'm not surprised there were no Guy of Gisborne figures left, draylon - they really did sell like hot-cakes. And not to little kids either, but to previously sane women, who carry him around in their handbags and take photos of him in various locations around the world - and then post them on the net! (Yes, it's true!!) Which shows that if Richard WAS cast as Bard, and a really nice figure (like the LotR ones) was produced - one that actually looked like him (the Guy figure doesn't) - it would be a hu...... more

LOL - you've lowered the tone nicely, draylon! I'm sure the producers are well aware of why most women watch Robin Hood, and it's got nothing to do with wee Robin and his band of merry boys. Hence the gratuitous shirtless scenes. You'll find the best way to watch this silly show is to record it and fast-forward through all the irrelevant bits - meaning all the scenes that don't have Richard Armitage in them. (BTW, he plays the Sheriff's evil henchman Guy of Gisborne, not the Sheriff himself.)... more

Have you seen Richard's new Guy of Gisborne look for 'Robin Hood', Series 3? It's quite impressive - he looks almost as though he could step straight into the Bard role without changing a thing. a href="http://s45.photobucket.com/albums/f82/mymaresaldana/?action=view&current=robin-hood-series3-guy-of-gisborne.jpg" target="_blank">... more

Hi Naela - I only just noticed your message - 7 months after you posted it! Sorry!

Who is Murtagh? My signature pic is of Richard Armitage - I'm embarrassed to admit that I have a completely one-track mind... you should see my Facebook page - it's a disgrace.

Occasionally though I think of other things - like my horses, especially my big boy Bill who is a 17hh warmblood and absolutely gorgeous. Is that one of your horses on your siggy pic?

    Cheers, Lizzy XX
