Good evening Shirefolk: Yes, it's a voice from the 'past!' I'm sorry I haven't been here in such a long time, but the past few months have been difficult. I think the last time I was able to visit, my mom had just broken her arm. She's doing much better now, but in the meantime, my father developed problems and has been in the VA hospital for 3 (is it 3?) weeks. He'll be coming home tomorrow, and we've had to re-arrange the house to accommodate his walking assistance devices, etc. So. not much else to r...... more

Good evening Middle-earth, Saturday evening - it's been a very long few days. Yesterday afternoon my mother fell and fractured her arm. Long story short, she'll be fine but will have to have surgery next week to set the bones. So, not much spare time for the next few weeks. I'm just so glad it wasn't worse. Ethelwynn - send the University a bill, mark it "For Consultation Services." Naela - glad your arm is better and you're shooting again. Please give all your 'critters' a scratch for me. Latest sea...... more

Good afternoon Shirefolk, It's the end of work, I'm just waiting for class tonight (this is for me - life-drawing, not work related). Imagine my delight to see so many friends that have posted. I'm spending almost all free time looking for a house. There are a few possibles, but I've only seen them from outside - tomorrow I see the insides of several, anyway. Oh my, I can't wait to have my own snug hole again, and not have to search boxes for belongings, only to remember that particular item is still...... more

Glad you're feeling better Naela :-) Just got back from walking miles along the lake shore in a 30 mph gale - sun, clouds, wind - it was perfect. (I must be a throwback to some earlier age.) Tomorrow, work, then looking at more houses in the afternoon. One absolute requirement - must have trees! Sweet dreams of Middle-earth everyone.... more

Good morning Shirefolk, Finally, time for a quick visit! Work is going well, and getting busier (thank goodness); finished my AutoCad Class (certificate and all); and spending most of my time looking for a house, either listings on-line or drive-bys. No luck yet, but I still hope to find a nice snug, hobbit-hole by spring... which around here could be several months away. And finally! Got to use my showshoes on a hike last weekend. Nice trail in the woods south of here. The shoes themselves are qu...... more

Good evening Shirefolk - Haldir - I'm sorry you're sick :-( It's that time of year, I'm afraid. Take care of yourself. You too, Elanor. Sleep is the best healer. And congratulations on passing the first test for your new cat. All of my cats were rescues, too. On this front, house-hunting has started in earnest. I've done the preliminary paperwork, now just have to find something I like and can afford. The goal is to be in (somewhere) by May. It will be such a relief to have my own home again. I'll t...... more

Good evening Shirefolk - It's a voice from the past.... The last time I logged on I saw all these huge, distorted smilely faces, thought there was some kind of virus going on. I'm glad that isn't the case. I have to admit, I decided to stay away for a day or so, which turned into more days... just too much going on. It seems everyone has major life-changes going on... STW and Ethelwynn in particular. I've always thought that there was too much emphasis on a wedding 'day', not enough on the rest of the m...... more

Good morning Shirefolk, Just time for a quick visit this morning... Thanks for the story file, Elanor - I won't give up, but I'm afraid I can't contribute much :-( right now. However, I'm looking forward very much to reading what our intrepid story-tellers have done so far. Good luck tomorrow at the tournament Naela - may your arrows fly true! And your idea of renting the ice-skiing equipment is a good one - I checked out a few places yesterday, and unfortunately, was aghast at how expensive it was...... more

Hi Catia! Sounds like summer where you are... which I guess it is! I hope you are well, and enjoying NZ. Did you decide to work on the farm? I've tried to keep up with the SIL thread myself, without much luck. I'm afraid I haven't had time to re-read the book, and the story is just too massive for my poor memory.... more

Good evening Shirefolk... This morning on NPR, the news was reporting 10" of snow around London and I've been thinking of Elanor and Naela all day... wondering if they were enjoying the unusual weather. I know it can be inconvenient, but sometimes an unexpected snow-day offers unexpected pleasures. I'll be looking for your photos Elanor. And here, it was in the 40s all day! There is supposed to be a new storm by Wednesday, so all (snow) will not be lost. Fortunately, since I finally broke down and bough...... more

Good evening Shirefolk - Elanor - are you snowed in? I'm guessing that really severe winter weather is unusual in your neighborhood. Hope you're all staying warm. Sorry I missed you last night - I just had time for a quick visit than went off to sleep. Today here was unusually nice - temps in the 40sF (5C), blue skies and it didn't even snow. The ducks looked quite happy. And this morning along the trail, I watched several people wind-skiing on the frozen part of the lake. It looked like so much fun -...... more

Good evening Shirefolk, Congratulations Naela - well done, indeed! Especially playing injured. I do hope you and Elanor are able to meet in London and have a great time. There are so many extraordinary places in the world, but there's just something quite special about the thought of London... It's been a hectic week, one thing and another. AutoCad class is going well - it's really starting to make sense, and although it's the kind of program that can take a long time to really know, I'm starting to fe...... more

Hello Shirefolk, Thanks Galdor - I just sent you an email. Of course it's a real language! Tomorrow is class #3, and we're going to start plotting room layouts. We just had a heat wave here - it was in the 30sF (0˚C) today. It's supposed to be back in single digits again tomorrow, though. I've heard there's been over 110" of snow already this winter and we still have a long way to go. Everyone keeps asking me if I still like snow... yes. My only regret is that I haven't had more time to go hiking. Wish ...... more

Thanks Galdor - I'll keep your kind offer in mind. I'm usually pretty good at picking up software, once I learn the basics. The first class was interesting, but a mystery. Second class - it actually started falling into place. Even though I'm new to AutoCad, I've worked with Photoshop, Illustrator, etc. for a long time, so that helps. CATIA!!! I'm so sorry, I just missed you last night. I've emailed back to you and tried posting on your blog, so something should be coming your way. I'm glad you're bette...... more

Thanks for the thought Elanor. The class is teaching the 2009 AutoCad, but my computer at work only has 2005, so I've been using a lot of unprintable language myself :-D A long time ago, a friend (who is considered brilliant with computers) told me the best way to deal with computers is to not be afraid... and beat them into submission!... more

Good point STW - "good fit" sounded lame to me, too. Maybe in the long run Ethelynn will be better off with someone else who knows how to 'get along well with others.' Naela - I'm sorry the movie set job won't be possible, but it's for a good cause. And I'm sure there will be other job offers, now that you're in the industry. And the temperature made it up to 27˚F today - and I guess that doesn't really qualify as warm, except as compared to last week. But, the weather is a favorite topic for conversat...... more

Good evening Shirefolk- Ethelwynn - I guess you could think of this time as a 'snow day.' I do hope you hear something soon. Naela - Are you working in more than one production? It sounds like you're very busy with lines, shooting, etc. And what kind of projects are they? What are the stories? The real deep, deep freeze here is supposed to break tomorrow - and warm up to 20˚F (-6˚C)! It has been interesting, but really, not all that unusual here. So, tomorrow morning, I'll bundle up for my Sunday a...... more

Hello again Shirefolk. It's good to be back - it's just been so hectic for the past few weeks. Actually I was surprised at the amount of postings here - and remember how busy it was last summer! Well, there have been so many changes in everyone's life in the past few months. All is basically well here, thank you! Although I spent quite a bit of time today battling my computer in one software program or another. Elanor - I hope your husband's job (and yours) is safe, too. Good evening Shirefolk, It's been awhile since I've had a chance to visit, but I don't feel so guilty anymore since it seems like everyone has a full schedule. I'm sorry about your troubles with student teaching Ethelwynn, and hope you can find another placement quickly. If it makes you feel any better, I have a good friend who's been teaching 1st grade for a number of years, who had similar pain-in-the-neck problems when she student taught. I'll keep fingers crossed for you. Congratulations Naela - ...... more

Ethelwynn - If ever there was a good reason to rant, this was one. I hope your friend is able to find a new home and rebuild her life. And glad you didn't get arrested. I recently read an article in The New Yorker about a sheriff who is forced to serve evictions - but at least does it with some humanity. He was able to help save the home of a 90-year-old woman who was being evicted because she had been conned into re-financing a home (she had already owned outright) with a variable rate mortgage and ...... more

Good evening Shirefolk: And thank you Ethelwynn - I've never heard or read of the Mad Snow Shoveler" before, but it's perfect. It describes to a T most everyone I know around here... except me. We've been having a snow storm one way or another for the past few weeks. And tomorrow it's supposed to be @ 50⁰F (10⁰C) so now we'll have a lot of slush instead. Really, snow is better :-) It's been such a treat to walk when the air is cotten-y with snowflakes. So, now Christmas is over... New Year's to go...... more

Ethelwynn - nope, never heard of the "Mad Snow Shoveler" but it sounds scarily like moi :-D Send it on, if you can. Oh, and I like to stack firewood, too - lots of time to ponder the mysteries of the universe. Elanor - I will think "snow thoughts" for your kids and send them east :-) I'm glad everyone seems to be doing well - just very busy. Maybe after the first of the year, when winter really sets in and there aren't many distractions like the holidays, we'll all have more time here. I've...... more

Good evening Shirefolk... Time is going so fast, I hardly know what day it is. And I hate to wish time to go by, but I will be glad when this holiday season is over. On the bright side, we've been been getting a snow storm every other day - I'm not sure how many inches, but I could have used snowshoes on my last hike. I'd send you some, Ethelwynn, but don't know how :-) I'm still in the minority, loving it - most people complain, but to live here is to live in snow this time of year - better to e...... more

One of the nice things about writing these films is that we can do whatever we want - and create as many films as we want. A agree that it would be impossible to re-create the entire SIL in one or even three films, but we can do as many as it takes. Maybe start out with three... then see where it leads. We have at least 2 years to while away before The Hobbit is released, after all :-) And I'm going to try to find an audio version of the SIL this weekend (great idea Ethelwynn).... more

Thank you Yavanna - yes, the photos were all taken within a few miles of where I live. There is a park by a lake that I've loved since I was a child - and always, somehow, manage to go back. I recently moved back here from the west coast, just in time for an exceptionally beautiful autumn.
And I'm delighted for you - life is too short to spend it always on the safe road. I'm currently starting a whole new life at my advanced age, and it's exhilarating. I've earned all my gray hair - and am going to enjoy every last one! From the sound of it, you are too - go, girl!

Beautiful pictures! Are they taken where you live? I like the quote by TH White, too. Re: "grow old and trembling" reminds me of a quote I try NOT to live by: "I grow old, I grow old. I shall wear the bottoms of my trousers rolled. . . . I have measured out my life in coffee spoons." -- TS Eliot, "The Love Song of J Alfred Prufrock." At 17 when I first read that I determined not to make that mistake. Looking back from 61, I'm delighted to say I haven't. If I lived in the Shire, I'd be a Took.
