I agree with Uruk-Hai that we need to cut the adaptations some slack. It was a hugely ambitious undertaking, and I think everyone involved did their best to capture the spirit of the books. The Gandalf quote about doing the best with the time one is given is a prime example that the writers got JRRT's meaning in important ways. Oh, yes! Read it at least once a year between now and the release date. I don't think it spoils the movie at all. We all know the reasons that the movie has to make changes in the plot and even to the characters. I guess I'm a purist -- What JRRT wrote is the "true" story. The movie is a separate experience to enjoy as a thing apart. Movies are fun, but Tolkien's work is forever!... more

I just listened to an interview by Sohaib from "Fictional Frontiers," and he said that he believes that the rumor about casting for a female character in the Hobbit is real. Who in the name of Hobbiton can this be? An elf, a dwarf maiden, a hobbit woman? I'm stumped!

Yes, 13 dwarves on the big screen! They will have to be a mix of serious and comic. That was JRD's genius, that he could pull both ascpects into his character. I do hope he is considered for Smaug's voice. He was such a perfect Treebeard. I love John Howe's Smaug painting, but it doesn't sound from the Del Toro interview on TORN that they will be using that one.... more

The positive side is that he's not making the film alone. I'm hoping that Peter, Fran, and Phillipa will keep vision of LOTR. That said, Hobbit does have a different feel. It's lighter, written before the Ring became a huge character in its own right. In LOTR we've seen a powerful, consuming ring, but when you read the Hobbit, it's a handy magic devise that causes invisibility. The writers will have to balance that carefully. Boromir/Aragorn

Think about this: how would the story have changed if Faramir had gone to the Council of Elrond and been in the Fellowship instead of Boromir? How you answer that question sheds light on the Boromir/Aragon relationship. Faramir in the book understood the ring immediately and was stronger against its power than his brother. The differences from book to movies

I agree with Shannon for the most part. It did bother me the first time I saw the movie that Arwen was at the Branduin. In fact, it still does, although I understand the reason for making her more active in the movie. The thing that bothered me most was Faramir taking Frodo & Sam to Gondor. As has been said before, it lessened Faramir's character. He was better than that right from the start.
