My yearly St. Patrick's Day post. It's a bit darker than what I've done before, but powerfully Irish. Forgive me for any latent depression, but if I see one more jolly, drunken, fat redhead or hear one more corny Irish joke I'm going to go stark mad. Enjoy the power if not the topic. ... more

Oh well, if the price of getting that weird stuff off of here is me looking like an idiot I'll happily put it on my charge. I'm loving the buildup to the assault, just for the record. Elanor and STW are a team that can't be beat. Then again, I'm the kind of person that wants a lot of build-up to a big show. As for the Fen rescue, I've got a rough outline but I'm waiting to see where STW leaves things before I flesh it out too much.... more

So, a nice little skin halter and skirt? Perhaps the skins of her victims? Gotta admit, it has a flavor to it . . . As for the aerodynamics, I'd bet she keeps most of her size even in bat form. Otherwise we've got matter disappearing, and a lot of matter in this case. We want Fingon ready for a fight, not standing there gaping and going "What the ---" Then again, Elf confusion . . . has possibilities . . .... more

Nice, Elanor. I think, for the sake of TV appropriate ratings, I'd put a dress on her but otherwise she's terrific. Something flowing, black or red, gauzy, and layered with lots of gold or silver and jeweled embroidery. After all, what's the good of being a vampire if you aren't a diva?... more

Would she have been an Elf or a Man before she was turned? Please tell me, Dear God! no vampire Orcs!! :-P Either way, very pale and small fangs. Reason: fangs longer than 1/4" would punch through both sides of the major arteries or veins they punctured and the vampire would not be able to get enough of a seal on the wound to get much blood. Upshot: the victim bleeds out internally while the poor vampire starves. Logic per Anita Blake Vampire Hunter novels.... more

No way, Blair. This isn't a Celtic story, so the Bad Guys can't win in the end. Besides, if we ask STW to write two separate endings for this scene he may just unleash a horde of Nazgul on us. I know he's got them around somewhere.... more

According to the information I have, Beren was born in 431 and this would make him about 20 during the BoSF. Still young enough for skin problems and occasional awkwardness, I'd think. Yes, I'm leaning toward this image as we've had so many smooth, clever, glib hotties in this movie. Glad you liked the scene. You're great for my ego.... more

Here's an introductiory scene for Barahir and a few of the men. Beren's not in it, mostly because I still haven't figured him out. As in, is he the smooth, confident, quarterback type who got all the girls and never put a foot wrong or is he still a bit clumsy on his feet and struggling with an occasional zit? I'm leaning toward the latter, but still not certain. Anyway, Barahir's intro: For approval [Camera open on a village of Men in Ladros. Fires burn over Ard-galen, and the snow and frost fli...... more

STW, I'm betting what we're seeing is illusion meant to panic the defenders before the real attack. Very nicely done. You have a true feel for the demonic nature of a person who enjoys torture and mayhem. I love every minute of it.... more

Those pictures are neat, Elanor. I never pictured the Mouse Tower that way, all white and pretty. Considering that a bishop was eaten alive by rats in it, according to legend, I'd thought it would be a dark, run-down, evil looking place. Now I'm picturing it made of gingerbread. Anyway, you know I'm not a researcher. Still, even a watchtower would have a support staff of craftsmen (craftsElves?) to repair gear, laundresses, cooks, etc. to care for the soldiers. There would probably also be familie...... more

STW, I don't know the numbers on how many Elves are in Tol Sirion, or even if there are Men there as well. I would guess that at least 1/3 to 1/2 of the population are "noncombatents", women, children, or people not trained to fight. As I was writing the intro, Finrod plans that all the noncombatents leave immediately. Whether they get until morning to get out of there or not is up to you. Be as diabolic as you wish. On Finrod's reaction to his brothers' death, how about this for a rewrite? I am ...... more

I'll give my reasoning for Finrod's reaction or lack of one, and let the group decide, Elanor. I know he doesn't say much at the time, but Finrod struck me as a clear-headed, emotionally controlled Elf (as a contrast to Caranthir, for instance). He's had a lot of blows in quick succession here, so hearing of his brothers' deaths isn't the first or even the third bit of tragedy he's dealing with. I wrote him as being a bit numb emotionally, and he can fall apart later when he's in a safer spot. Just m...... more

I'd thought STW wanted to blend it into his work, or I'd have posted it sooner. Here it is, for approval: [Camera fade in on River Sirion, a wide, deep, and fast moving river. Camera advance upstream until Sirion widens into a lake with a strong current. At top horizon we see a flash of white. Camera advance to island, which is heavily forested but has steep, rocky cliffs white breakers, and swirls that indicate riptides along the waterline. Camera shift to island surface, covered in deep snow....... more

Hope everyone's weekend went well. I have to confess I'm still working on the best way to introduce Barahir. I could say that real life got in the way, but truth is I just keep picking over details. I don't know many Elves personally -- they've generally gotten a bit grumpy with Men in the past few thousand years. That whole bit about Isildur and the Ring, you know how they are. Those I do know tend to slum it around Humans, so I'm not sure if they're good samples of the true Nolodr Elves. Anyway, here's what I've got from a quick survey: 1- Elves don't use guns at all. Noisy, stinking things and not nearly as accurate as the longbow. 2- For this question, I got lascivious grins and chuc...... more

STW, you are the master of mayhem so I know I'm making suggestions to an expert but here goes anyway. I think if we establish the fortress, which we have already done, then we must see it fall. Not in flashback, in real action. Otherwise half our audience is going to be sitting there going "What . . . in . . ." and switch over to Sanford and Son reruns. I also like the idea of a subtle magical attack, with fear and doubt overwhelming the defenders before the bad guys arrive to draw blood. One of...... more

Here I was thinking that the city would be white and shining, and when we show it as Tol-in-Gaurhoth it could be dingy, unkempt, maybe even deliberately damaged. Nothing sadder than a once-loved home that has fallen on hard times. I also agree with avoiding the name Minas Tirith, just to keep confusion to a minimum. And yes, I'd love to introduce Barahir's people. Nothing like a romp through a swamp to put one in a cheerful mood.... more

Rolled up newspaper, STW? Having trouble housebreaking those Werewolves? I also like Elanor's outline. Moving Tol Sirion to make it part of the Dagor Bragollach makes good sense on film, and simplifies our introduction of Barahir. If he and his people were getting away from the same mess that floored Aegnor and Angrod, they would come into our story as jumpy refugees rather than champions bent on saving the innocent. Then again, with women like Emeldir among them, they might not be all that jumpy ...... more
