i'm sorry, but the argument that the films would be way too long with all of the content from the books is a load of bs... there were just as many things added in the movies as omitted from them. also, if the battles had all just been fifteen minutes shorter, everything could've been fitted in to a time frame that may have been a half an hour longer than the original movies. so for all of you that say it couldn't have been done, listen to me, it could've... more

i meant that it would take longer to film and create although it probably would add an extra half an hour. and yes, it would be a much better and more respected trilogy. and the exchange of loss of money would be made up by the fact that it was better. and there is the difference. people can either do a better job on something and do it from their heart and not make as much money or they can do a passable job and make more money. and yes, i'm saying the movies were passable... more

"the most honored movie trilogy in film history"?????? yes, they made a lot of money, but the story didn't hold the same meaning and the characters didn't seem as realistically human as in the books. I know a movie cannot show a persons feelings very well but i do think that they could have at least left the story in a respectable fashion... more

The LoTR movies did NOT capture the spirit of the books at all. And a really good director could have done it. It would have maybe taken a little longer and been a little less profitable, but it would have been much more respectable in my opinion... more

i agree 100%... the other thing that annoyed me was how the story was changed soooooooooooooo much in TTT. the FoTR seemed close enough to the real story, even though it cut out some parts that i think should have be left. after that the movies just seemed to get worse and worse... more

and i DO want a faithful recreation of Tolkien's story.. if that's not what it's going to be then they shouldn't call it the hobbit or promote it in any way as being Tolkien's, because Tolkien will be way better if they can't stick to his story... more

are you really questioning whether or not a few talking beasts will look silly compared to the LoTR movies? there are "talking trees" in TTT if you want to look at them from the point of view of an outsider and they are by no means the silliest thing in that movie... I mean, aragorn falls off of a huge cliff and he and his horse live and ride in to helms deep just before the battle and a lot of elves randomly come and help... that is the stupidest-silliest thing they could have possibly done with that mo...... more

Throughout the story the treasure is separate from the adventure until the last few chapters (the story is called "There and Back Again"). It is the goal of the party but it is vague and cloudy. It is something they want very much, but since the story is told from Bilbo's point of view, it is forgotten and put into the back of his mind after their first dangerous adventure. Even if the arkenstone had been mentioned, Bilbo would not have cared about it until they found the treasure. So it seems fitting th...... more

And my vote would be the opposite... Smaug NEEDS to talk... Dragons can talk, there is no question about that as it also comes up in the CoH along with the Hobbit... The same with the eagles; they talk in the CoH, the Hobbit, and the LoTR.... So you cannot say that Tolkien intended to cut out all talking beasts... he may have intended to cut out the speaking of lesser beings, like trolls, but there is no question that eagles and dragons could talk... more

i don't think the arkenstone should be used int that way... it gives the story too much purpose for what is wanted after they get there... it seemed to me throughout the book that the focus was merely on getting there and there was no purpose for the treasure once they were there.. it is even stated that they never really had a plan for the treasure... more

it would in no way be silly... and the hobbit is essentially separate from the lotr in many ways... i admit, many of the talking creatures can be taken out.. but gwaihir, smaug, and the crow obviously cannot be taken out... the trolls, even though i would rather they were in the movie, i admit, are of little consequence to the story so i'm pretty sure they will be taken out... more

I don't know... the one good thing about the movies is that they indirectly led me to read the books. My friend at school loved the movies so i decided to start reading the hobbit and so on. i didn't see the movies until a year or two after i read the books and then i reread the books and noted all of the inconsistencies... and they annoy the crap out of me! :D... more

but why couldn't they have just handed every actor the books and tell them to read them until they fully understand their character? then they could all talk the books over and write the script after the characters know who they are. i know it sounds like some cheesy kind of book club idea, but seriously, I'm sure actors can read....... maybe... more

The other thing that i think the movies greatly lacked was the deep friendship that grew between gimli and legolas. in the books legolas begins as an arrogant prince who looks down on the others. as the story progresses he turns into a steadfast friend of gimli, who is himself all but perfect. The change shows how Legolas comes to understand others and to accept different things. i don't think they ever made that change in the movies. he always seemed like he was above the others, even when he became fri...... more

yes. i wholeheartedly agree, peter. In the books, Aragorn is not sure if they should bring the ring to minas tirith or not. He only understands the full peril of the ring when he learns of Boromir's mistake. Also, after merry and pippin are captured, he does not know whether they should follow the ringbearer or pursue the orcs. Also, when Aragorn leaves dunharrow he is very distraught by eowyn's love for him. As well as a bazillion other things, this just shows how much he was changed for the movie. He w...... more
